Magnetic Effects

Posts have been a bit scarce this past week but I'm back on track and ready to fill you in on what's been happening and treat you to some visual eye candy! This week we're having a Watch Basics 102 course! If you remember, we had a Watch Basics 101 course not too long ago and learned some extremely useful information about timepieces. David shared this really interesting video with me earlier, so if you're into Rolex watches and are interested in why magnets can greatly effect the accuracy of your watch then look no further!

Kimberly described the music as Bollywood meets Alfred Hitchcock and I have to agree...

Happy Lunar New Year!

It's officially YEAR OF THE DRAGON!
Or should I say it's the Year of the Naga? John Hardy features a beautiful collection inspired by the mythical dragon. By the way, we just got the above bracelet in stock. It clasps at the dragon's mouth! How cool is that?? Even if you're not into dragons, you should come in and check this bracelet out. It has such intricate and beautiful detail that it's hard to think of it as anything but fascinating. Or maybe my opinion is swayed because I'm a dragon!

P.S. Are you a dragon?

Rise Cupcakes + Mardi Gras = Deliciousness with a baby included!

Today Kimberly picked up some festive cupcakes from Rise Cupcakes! Not only are they extremely delicious but they're pretty and colorful as well... talk about fitting right in with our week of color!

They're so mouthwatering that two were eaten as soon as they were set on the table!

And guess who got the baby...

Lucky me! I just have to make sure to bring a king cake (or more cupcakes!) next!
Aren't they pretty?!

What color are you?

We've had a very colorful morning here at Lewis Jewelers! Wendy was our speaker for our first Breakfast of Champions for 2012. (Breakfast for Champs is a monthly breakfast we have with speakers, a cute set up and delicious eats!) Since we're celebrating color this week, Wendy talked about color personalities at work. The colors consist of Gold, Blue, Green and Orange. Here's a tiny bit of info about each color:
  •  GOLD - The driving force for a gold personality is responsibility. Golds are conscientious, dependable invdividuals who want to do the right thing and follow established standards. Attributes for a Gold: Prepared, Reliable, On-Time, Appropriate, Follows rules, Details Oriented and Organized.
  • BLUE - The driving force is relationships. Before blues make a decision, they check to determine how it will affect the people involved. They will go the extra mile, often putting the needs of others before their own. Attributes for a Blue: Friendly, Helpful, Compassionate, Considerate, Cooperative, Emotional, Expressive, Imaginative, Creative and Affectionate.
  • ORANGE - Oranges are opportunistic. Their driving force is freedom. If they feel they do not have choices, they may just create some. Natural risk-takers, rules seem to be guidelines to aim for and are often flexible and negotiable. Attributes for Orange: Active, Take charge, Competitive, Negotiator, Spontaneous, Performer (they're entertaining!) and Multi-tasking.
  • GREEN - The driving force for Greens is competency. Naturally curious, they thirst for knowledge and information and like to come up with solutions and systems for solving problems and inventing a better future. Preferring to keep their emotions to themselves, they approach situations objectively. Attributes: Problem-solvers, Independent, Tenacious, Self-assured, Witty sense of humor, Logical, Analytical, Creative and Ingenious.
So which color are you? At first I felt like a Blue, but once Orange was explained I second guessed my first assumption. Honestly, everybody can have a little bit of every color so the real question should be which color dominates your personality? We learned that in order for a work environment to actually work together and accomplish goals there must be personalitites of each color. Imagine if everybody were an Orange personality type... that would be entertaining!

Here are a few pictures from our colorful morning breakfast meeting:

The beautiful breakfast set up... COLOR EVERYWHERE!

We picked a plate based on which color we thought we were.

Delicious food from The Egg and I.

We love Fiesta dinnerware... and bold colors!

Pick a plate!

Wendy speaking to the Team! She is definitely an ORANGE!

We're always full of laughs and giggles!

Wendy requested a quirky video
as an introduction to her presentation.
Quirky AND colorful? Done and done! Enjoy!

Have a wonderful weekend!

After a busy week, it's time for everybody to relax and refresh!

By the way... doesn't that drink look delicious? See more pictures and get the recipe here

The drinks remind me of summer and if I had to envision myself wearing some jewelry while drinking a freshly squeezed cocktail it would probably be anything from Konstantino's Iris Collection. Which is available at Lewis Jewelers!

Are you as brave as this little girl?

It's almost Valentine's Day! Here's some nostalgic Old Love.

With Valentine's Day comes treats! Get your baking tools out! You'll need them after seeing these cheesecake cupcakes!

Watch Basics 101

Today our newest Lewis Jewelers watchmaker, David, conducted a highly informative class called Watch Basics 101. David specializes in Rolex watches so he's packed with a plethora of information. The Lewis team was educated on different areas ranging from parts of a timepiece to sapphire crystal vs. acrylic and the importance of having a Rolex serviced regularly.

Here are just a few interesting things David taught the team:
  • Synthetic sapphire crystal is far more durable than an acrylic crystal and it takes a hard hit for it to chip. Chips are weak areas much like chipped paint on a car. A chip can eventually turn into a crack, which can possibly cause the crystal to shatter. These chips can cause small amounts of water to get inside your movement, which can then make parts rusty. Even though synthetic sapphire crystal is extremely durable, it's important to remember to handle your timepiece with care.
  • Wondering if your watch has a sapphire or acrylic crystal? Hold it up to your cheek. If it has a cool feeling then it's a sapphire crystal. Pretty cool, huh?
  • A Rolex is designed to be properly refinished ten times in its lifetime. Meaning, it's great to have us polish out the scratches, but don't have it done too often!

After the Watch Basics 101 course, I had the pleasure of sitting in on an inspection after precleaning. The photos below show David inspecting a Rolex Lady Datejust.

David is disassembling the movement.

Rolex Lady Datejust movement.

All the parts that have been disassembled.

After inspecting all the small parts to make sure everything's in pristine condition, all parts are placed inside a divided case for cleaning.

It takes about 41 minutes for the parts to be cleaned.

Isn't that incredible?? Disassembling the movement takes David 20-30 minutes. The movement consists of 220 parts, but only about 100 parts are disassembled. Imagine working on something so microscopic and delicate! The technical side of a watch really is something that's fascinating to learn about. We're definitely planning on having a Watch Basics 102 course in the near future!

Big Bling

At a whopping 6.33 ct total weight, this ring takes the spotlight this week at Lewis Jewelers. It's a true beauty with its 3ct round center stone, the surrounding baguettes and one of the most intricate side views if I've ever seen one. One of the most stunning aspects of this ring is that it's a Tacori engagement ring. That's right friends! For the first time ever Tacori has launched engagement rings that contain the big bling factor with 3ct+ center stones!

And, of course, I tried it on! If you're in the Houston area you should definitely stop by Lewis Jewelers just to meet this blinging beauty in person. But beware... there's a really good chance that you'll fall in love!

The Black Diamond...

It's dark, anomalous and even a little mystifying. Honestly, this post came to mind due to this Texas weather we're having right now. If you're in Texas, I'm sure you agree. Say you've got to run some errands on this dreary day. Put on all your black, maybe a pop of color, but definitely a pop of shimmering darkness (see below) and all of a sudden you've had a 100% increase in edginess, confidence and Hey! did the sun just peep from behind the clouds?? Oh wait, it was just your 26ct black diamond ring...

Maybe Black Diamonds aren't your thing, but you've got to admit... feeling like Carrie Bradshaw wouldn't be that bad!

The featured Black Diamond Ring is available exclusively at

New Store Progress

Thursday Morning we had our 2nd-ever team meeting at the new store. This was the whole team's first opportunity to view the store after the walls have been put up. The store is beginning to look like a store! One can take a stroll through the whole store and get a pretty good feel for how the store is going to look once everything is completed! We here at Lewis Jewelers are oh so excited!

Inside a very special part of the new store.

There are beautiful architectural features throughout the whole space. I can't wait to see it after the lighting is installed.

Slade is having everybody stand inside one office! Talk about huge! I'm pretty sure it'll fit three people with no problem!

Those three people include Wendy, Kimberly and myself. Here's Wendy doing either a happy dance or giving off a warning sign.

Above are three diamond showcase rooms that'll be separated by glass walls!

Slade showing everybody where they'll go for time out. Kidding. It's actually one of our polishing rooms.

Here's the back office. Isn't it huge?!

Our showroom floor!

Once the meeting was over, we headed back to our current location. We love our store, but we can't wait to make the move! It's going to be exciting to go to a new environment, continue our relationships with our current customers and make new friends with all the new people that'll be coming into our store for the first time!

This & That

When looking for color palettes or inspiration I often look at textile patterns and always find a variety of beautiful things. I thought it would be interesting to find patterns that reminded me of pieces of jewelry that we have in the store. This seems a little challening, and honestly, it is. However, after finding a few patterns I began to see comparisions all over the place! Here are just a few, for now. This may be an ongoing post and hopefully you'll find inspiration and similarities between textiles in your wardrobe or home decor and your jewelry!

New Year, New Look!

Happy New Year! Hopefully you have a wonderful year ahead of you full of love, joy, happiness and a lot of sparkle! We here at Lewis Jewelers are excited for the New Year. We'll be moving to a new store, growing, learning and changing things up a bit! We're pleased to announce that not only will we be moving, but we'll also be changing our logo to fit our new store. We're excited to begin the process of switching things up and having our customers recognize our new logo!

(please click on the photo above to view it at a larger size)

We wanted to keep a hint of our old logo, hence the cursive L. We felt it was important to keep the L because it's something that is recognized and associated with our store. After all, what's Lewis without the L?! We love that it's more modern and when everything is taken away except "Lewis" it's bold and timeless.

We're so excited for this change we wish we could toast to it right now! A virtual toast will have to do. Here's to the New Year and a new look! Clink!
